Biographical History
Mrs. Black was born in Chicago Feb. 24, 1866. She was educated at St. Mary's College, Notre Dame. She married George Black Aug. 1, 1904. George Black was Governor of the Yukon and they lived there for 54 years. In 1921 her husband was elected to the House of Commons and was later Speaker of the House from 1930-1935. Mrs. Black supported the IODE and organized 3 of its chapters. She also gave her support to the Victorian Order of Nurses. In 1917 she was made a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London, England. She was elected to the House of Commons in 1935. Her book My Seventy Years was published in 1938. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1946 for her cultural and social contributions to the Yukon. She died in Whitehorse Oct. 31, 1957.
