Biographical History

Bill Traylor was born into slavery in 1854. He lived on the Traylor plantation until 1938. He did not start drawing until he was eighty-six years old. His art became popular with the help of a young artist by the name of Charles Shannon. Traylor is considered a folk artist and also outsider artist. Traylor mainly drew animals that he remembered from the farm that he lived on and people that passed by him on the street. Traylor's art did not become widely popular until after his death. Bill Traylor died October 23, 1949.
