Biographical History

Sidney Lewis Jones was born on September 23, 1933 in Ogden, Utah. He received a B.S. in Economics from Utah State University in 1954, and an M.B.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University, 1956 to 1960. He served as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, 1954 to 1956. He was a professor of finance at Northwestern University (1960-1965) and the University of Michigan (1965-1969, 1971-1972). In 1969, Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) chairman Paul McCracken recruited him to serve as a CEA senior economist and special assistant to the chairman. He served in this position until 1971, when he returned to the University of Michigan. Over the next 23 years, Jones served as a Federal government official in a variety of positions involving economic policy, and between these government positions, he held research positions with Washington think tanks. These positions include: Minister-Counselor for Economic Affairs, U.S. Mission to NATO in Brussels, Belgium, 1972 to 1973; Assistant Secretary for Economic Affairs, Department of Commerce, 1973 to 1974; Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy to the Counsellor for Economic Policy, The White House, 1974 to 1975; Counselor to the Secretary and Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy, Department of the Treasury, 1975 to 1977; Fellow, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Smithsonian Institution, 1977 to 1978; Assistant to the Board of Governors, Federal Reserve System, 1978; Research Scholar, American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy, 1979 to 1983; Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, Department of Commerce, 1983 to 1985; Fellow, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Smithsonian Institution, 1985 to 1986; Associate Faculty, Center for Public Policy Education, Brookings Institution, 1986 to 1989; Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy, Department of the Treasury, 1989 to 1993; and since 1993, Adjunct Faculty, Center for Public Policy Education, Brookings Institution.
