Biographical History
In 1964, the Extension Division at the University of Utah was renamed the Division of Continuing Education in order to emphasize its mission of outreach to adults wishing to advance professional skills and gain personal enrichment through education.
A Department of Extension Work was formed at the University of Utah in 1911 to provide courses for individuals unable to attend regular classes on campus. In 1916, the Department was reorganized into a distinct school at the University called the "Extension Division." In 1964, the Extension Division was renamed the "Division of Continuing Education" to emphasize the continuation of education for those adults seeking either to improve job skills or gain personal enrichment, and to differentiate the Division from agricultural extension agencies operating at other colleges and universities. From 1965 to 1973, the Division of Continuing Education underwent the three short Deanships of Grant Holt (1964-1965), Brigham D. Madsen (1965-1967), and Sherman Sheffield (1967-1973). Oakley J. Gordon became Dean of the Division in 1973 and served until his retirement in 1991.
