Biographical History
Robert Stevenson Haggart was born in Salem, New York on 7 April 1891. He attended Washington Academy in Salem, New York, then high school in Granville, New York, prior to his appointment on 17 June 1908 to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. While a midshipman, he played class baseball and basketball, and was business manager of the Lucky Bag. Graduated and commissioned ensign in June 1912, he was promoted to lieutenant junior grade on 8 June 1915. During World War I, he received temporary promotions to lieutenant and lieutenant commander, was commissioned in the ranks in 1918 and 1922, respectively, and subsequently advanced to the rank of captain, 8 December 1939. He commanded USS Tennessee (BB-43) from 20 June 1942 until 26 March 1944. He reported for duty as commander, Naval Training Station, San Diego, California in April 1944 and served in that capacity until January 1948. He retired on 1 July 1949 with the rank of commodore. He died on 17 July 1966 in San Diego, California.
