Biographical History
Herbert Wallace Schneider was born on March 16, 1892, in Berea, Ohio. He studied under John Dewey at Columbia University where he received his Ph. D. in philosophy, later he became John Dewey's teaching assistant. In 1928 and 1937 Schneider was a research fellow in Italy, and made a careful study of fascism, its roots, and expression in Corporate State theory. After serving as an instructor and assistant professor at Columbia, he was appointed full professor of religion and philosophy in 1929. In addition, he was a Fulbright Fellow to France in 1950 where he lectured on American philosophy at the Universities of Paris, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Grenoble, and Marseilles; from 1952-1957 he was an Eranos lecturer in Ascona, Switzerland. He also served as a visiting professor at the Universities of Illinois, Washington, and Georgia, Emory University, Colorado College, Pomona College, and taught summers at the University of Minnesota, University of Hawaii, and Western Washington State College. After his retirement in 1957, Schneider was a Distinguished Service Professor at Colorado College from 1958-1959; Professor of Philosophy at the Claremont Graduate School from 1959-1967 and director of Blaisdell Institute for Advanced Study in World Cultures and Religions (affiliated with Claremont Colleges) from 1959-1963, while serving as Acting Dean of the Claremont Graduate School from 1960-1962. In 1967, Schneider became Emeritus Professor of Claremont Graduate School. He has written numerous articles and books, some of them endowed lectures: Three Dimensions of Public Morality (Indiana), Morals for Mankind (Missouri), and Ways of Being (Columbia). Schneider lived in retirement in Claremont, California, until his death on October 15, 1984.
