Biographical History

Founded in 1876 as a group of women who took flowers to patients at Indianapolis City Hospital. Over the years the mission took on a number of projects, including founding a boys' home (1879); a nursing school (1883); Eleanor Hospital (1895) for children; and a tuberculosis hospital (1936). Many of these projects were taken over by the city. The mission also worked closely with Indianapolis City Hospital. A visiting nurse provided care and food for poor families with tuberculosis. After 1936, the mission's function became primarily advisory.
