Founded in 1901, the New York State Nurses Association is the oldest and largest state nurses association in the country with a membership of over 34,000 and represents approximately 30,000 registered nurses for collective bargaining purposes. The Association's founding and continuing purposes include insuring public access to qualified nursing services; advancing the educational and professional standards of nursing; and promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses. Toward these purposes the Association has evolved into a multi-purpose organization which has pioneered efforts in nursing legislation, nursing education, nursing practice, nursing research, the organization and delivery of nursing care services, collective bargaining and other economic and general welfare matters. The Association's records pertain to all facets of its complex and extensive corporate, administrative, programmatic, legislative and labor organization activities including its relationships with its district associations, the American Nurses' Association and other state nurses associations, several hundred.
