Biographical History
William Lloyd Harding was born on a farm in Sibley, Iowa. He attended Morningside College and got a law degree from the University of South Dakota. He taught school and then practiced law in Sioux City. In 1907 he married Carrie Lamoreux. The couple had one daughter, Barbara Esther. Harding served in the state legislature from 1907 until 1912. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1912 and again in 1914. In 1916 he won the gubernatorial election and served two two-year terms. During his administration the State Board of Conservation, the state park system, and the highway system were established. After serving as governor Harding went on the Chautauqua circuit, worked to promote the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence waterway project and was actively involved with the national Republican Party.
