Biographical History
Mitchell Franklin was born on Feb. 19, 1902 in Montreal, Canada. He received his A.B., J.D., and S.J.D. degrees from Harvard Law School. His career in law started as a legal advisor for the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, moved on into private practice, and teaching. From 1930 to 1967 he taught law at Tulane University and was instrumental in founding the Institute of Comparative Law (today known as the Eason-Weinmann Center of Comparative Law). In 1967 he was appointed visiting professor of Philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo and as Professor of Philosophy from 1968 to 1971. In 1972 the University's mandatory retirement age was enforced on him but it was later overturned by an extension granted by the Board of Trustees. From 1972 to 1974 he was appointed Professor of Law at the University. He died in his Buffalo home in 1986.
