Biographical History
Epithet: Major-General; of Add MS 44147
British general who became a national hero for his exploits in China and his ill-fated defense of Khartuom against Sudanese rebels.
"Chinese" Gordon.
Charles George Gordon was a British officer who experienced considerable notoriety for his military exploits. As a member of the Royal Engineers, he distinguished himself during the Crimean War and was promoted to Captain. He played a key role in British military activities in China, and returned to Britain with great acclaim as "Chinese Gordon." He was later employed in Egypt, where he mapped the upper Nile, and the Sudan, where he put down several rebellions and suppressed the slave trade. A final post as Governor-general led to his death in the siege of Khartoum. Although he was considered a martyred hero by the populace, later appraisals have suggested he defied the British government by remaining in Khartoum when he could have left. He was also a philanthropist, and had an interest in mysticism.
