Ohio-born David P. Thompson (1834-1901) arrived in Oregon in 1853.

Ohio-born David P. Thompson (1834-1901) arrived in Oregon in 1853.

He served as governor of the Idaho Territory, mayor of Portland, an Oregon state senator, and Minister to Turkey. In 1900 he donated the Elk Fountain, designed by sculptor Roland Hinton Perry, to the city of Portland. Thompson was an early owner of the New Market Theater. His 1861 marriage to Mary R. Meldrum produced children Ralph Thompson, Bessie (Thompson) Teal, and Genevieve (Thompson) Smith.
