Biographical History

Lewis was born 1802 Aug. 10 to Francis and Mary Dixon Hall Lewis in Dinwiddie Co., Va. He moved with his parents to Hancock Co., Ga., in 1806, and graduated from S. Car. College in 1822. In 1823 he moved to Autauga Co., Ala.; was admitted to the bar that same year, and married Susan Elizabeth Elmore, 1823 Mar. 11. He served in the Ala. House of Representatives, 1825-1827, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1829-1844. He resigned that position when he was appointed U.S. Senator, a position he held until his death. He and his wife had seven children: Laura Ann, who married Robert Lindsay Scott; Francis Maxcy, who married Carrie Baker; John Archer (1829-1850); Mary Susan (1830-1850); Dixon Hall (1834-1899), who married Sarah Ill in 1860; William Henry; and Sarah Terry Fitzpatrick (1838-1839). He died 1848 Oct. 25 in N.Y., N.Y.
