Biographical History
Mathematician. A.B., Yale University, 1883; Ph. D., 1885. Assistant professor of mathematics, Northwestern University, 1889-1891; associate professor, 1891-1892. Professor of mathematics, University of Chicago, 1892-1931. Head, Department of Mathematics, University of Chicago, 1896-1931. President, American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Mathematical Society.
Eliakim Hastings Moore (1862-1932) served as chairman of the Mathematics Department from its founding in 1892 until his retirement in 1931. After Moore received his doctorate from Yale in 1885, he taught at that university and Northwestern before being called to Chicago. Undoubtedly, he was one of the seminal mathematicians of his day. During his life, Moore produced over seventy published and unpublished studies on the subjects of general analysis, geometry and foundations, group theory, integral equations and general analysis, and function theory. Many of Moore’s students made significant contributions to mathematics. T. H. Hildebrandt, E. T. Bell, H. L. Slaught, and Oswald Veblen, to name a few, stood as a tribute to Professor Moore’s influence and teaching ability. In addition, Moore held presidencies in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Mathematical Society, and was influential in the founding of the Mathematical Association of America.
