Biographical History
Bishop Arthur J. Moore (1888-1974), Methodist bishop and author of Georgia.
Arthur James Moore, Methodist bishop and author, was born 26 December 1888 in Argyle, Georgia, and died 30 June 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Moore served the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and then the United Methodist Church (U.S.) after the merger in many capacities: roving evangelist (1909), general evangelist (1911-1920), pastor (1920-1930), and bishop (1930-1960). As a bishop he supervised the Pacific Coast Area (1930-1934), foreign works except that of Latin America (1934-1940), Atlanta area comprising Georgia and Florida (1941-1948), and Georgia (1948-1960). While bishop he also served as president of the Methodist board of missions and organizer and first president of its board of evangelism; vice chairman of Emory University's board of trustees and president of Wesleyan Female College and chair of its board of trustees. Moore, along with Louie D. Newton, organized the Georgia Temperance League, which was renamed the Georgia Commission on Moral and Civic Concerns. He was also the author of two books of sermons.
