David Stewart Erskine, 11th Earl of Buchan, was born in Scotland and educated privately at home. He also studied at the University of Glasgow where he pursued his interest in designing, etching, and engraving.
The Earl of Buchan pursued many interests and occupations throughout his life including agriculture, antiquarianism, and politics. He was a patron of the arts and a man of letters. There were approximately 1,635 letters in his papers after his death. Buchan had a penchant for writing members of the Royal family, evidenced by the over 1600 letters left at death, and was known to have had considerable influence with George III.
