Biographical History

Western Sorosis is a women's club; of Topeka, Kan.

It was organized in 1893 by Margaret Hill McCarter and Mrs. H.E. Roby. The founders desired that the club be to the west what the first woman's club in the United States, Sorosis, was to the east. The purpose of organizing was the provide a source of constant inspiration for better living, for higher ideals of women, and for the active participation of women in the community. The name Western Sorosis was an adaptation of the New York club, and was derived from the Greek word meaning a collection of flowers on one stem. Qualities for membership were the ability to write a good paper, ladylike deportment, and willingness to do the tasks assigned by the club.

From the description of Western Sorosis records, 1894-2007. (Kansas State Historical Society). WorldCat record id: 707688487
