Biographical History

Philip Van Rensselaer was born in Albany on May 19, 1747. He was the son of Colonel Kiliaen and Ariantje (Schuyler) Van Rensselaer. In 1768 he married Maria (Sanders, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Schuyler) Sanders. They had twelve children. During the Revolutionary War, Philip was the Storekeeper of the Northern Department of the Continental Army. (He was appointed in 1776 by General Schuyler). It was his responsibility to supply the army and to procure it's supplies. The accounts, receipts, bills and other papers give a picture of the movement of these materials to the army, as well as the type of supplies required. Philip died in Albany on March 3, 1798.
