Victor Gutierrez received a B.S. in Business Administration and Accounting from St. Peter's College in New Jersey. He worked at J. Walter Thompson (JWT) during the 1970s and 80s. In 1976, he was elected Executive Vice President of the Finance division, and in 1986, he became Chief Financial Officer. During a hostile take-over attempt at JWT in 1987, Gutierrez resigned and was replaced by Terence Martin.
Following his tenure at JWT, Gutierrez owned several fast food franchises and private retail outlets before joining the staff of Young & Rubicam. There, he served in various capacities for the Latin American division, including as Vice President of Business Affairs, Worldwide Financial Director for the Colgate-Palmolive account, and as Vice Chairman. He eventually managed over 23 advertising agencies across Latin America. In 1999, Gutierrez began working as Senior Vice President for Yupi Internet, Inc., a family-owned business in Miami, Florida.

Beginning in 1919 the New York Office of the J. Walter Thompson Company began to systematically retain the advertisements it had created. The Statistical and Information Department, renamed the Information and Records Department in the 1920s, arranged the advertisements in scrapbooks. Initially, most of the advertisements preserved were tear sheets, the actual advertisements clipped from newspapers and magazines. By the 1930s, however, the department retained the final printers' proofs for magazine advertisements. The scrapbooks therefore began to be called proof books.
In the 1950s the responsibility for creating proof books fell to individual account groups. In addition to the account group proof books, a file clerk under the supervision of the Traffic Department maintained proofs. When no longer of current use, the file clerk transferred the proofs to a storeroom or records center. Throughout these years, individuals who helped create campaigns or who managed an account sometimes would maintain personal proof books.
In 1977 the New York Office established a Creative Library. Its responsibilities included the preservation on microfilm of all print advertisements, which was done for most of the 1980s. Imprints are located in the JWT Microfilm Collection; the originals were apparently destroyed after microfilming. The Creative Library has made an effort to create files of work from all major U.S. offices, so work from Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., is better represented in the collection from the late 1970s and after. Where known, the office that created the advertisements is noted in the container list. In addition, JWT subsidiaries such as Brouillard Communications or Lord Geller Federico and Einstein (LGFE) are noted where their work has been identified.

The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) was founded in New York in 1864 and is one of the world's oldest and largest advertising firms.
Maury (C. Maurice) Holland was a vaudevillian and Broadway actor (1920s) who worked for Columbia in both silent films and talkie shorts (1930s) and then joined the JWT New York Office's Radio and Television Department in 1936 to direct radio shows for the agency. The Radio/TV Department was responsible for creating and working with radio and television programs to advertise JWT client products. Among other programs, Holland directed Kraft Television Theatre, a live anthology drama series on NBC, from 1948 to the show's cancellation in 1958. He died Nov. 14, 1974 in Greenwich, Conn.

JWT's first international office was set up in London in 1899. By 1923, it had opened six other European offices; by 1927, that number had doubled. Between 1927 and 1931, the company added additional offices in South Africa, India, Canada, Australia, Japan and South America. These offices were opened primarily so that advertisements could be geared more specifically to cultures of different regions.

The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) evaluated its progress through a systematic study of the performance of its client accounts. Among the tools used to gauge the success of advertising campaigns and the health of ongoing client relationships were the compilation of account histories. The earliest surviving efforts by JWT to document its account relationships include approximately one hundred account histories collected from 1925-1926 by the Business Extension Department. The histories were prepared largely by Henry C. Miner, Jr. (JWT employee, 1925-1933) under the direction of Rae H. Smith (then a Representative and later Vice President and Director). From the 1920s through the 1940s, JWT New York Office’s Department of Information and Records compiled records particularly on New York Office clients, including account histories, label and packaging designs and other printed materials. Beginning in the mid-1950s, the New York Office Information Center collected newspaper and magazine clippings, inter-office memoranda, research reports, and publications for various clients. This practice continued through the 1980s.
In addition to such institutional record-keeping practices, from the 1930s through the 1950s, individual staff members also compiled account records, which were then transferred to the Information Center of the New York Office. Howard Henderson, Vice President and Manager of the Cincinnati Office, gathered correspondence, memoranda, and reports regarding three clients: Chesebrough-Pond's, General Cigar Company, and the United States Playing Card Company . John Monsarrat, a JWT Executive Vice President and Director, provided material for the Chesebrough-Pond’s account file. Another JWT Vice President, William C. McKeehan, provided further material about the United States Playing Card Company account in the 1950s.

In April 1941 Stanley B. Resor, then president of the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT), outlined the advertising industry's role in the coming conflict. In an article published in New York City Sunday newspapers, he spoke of advertising agencies' two goals: to keep consumers purchasing goods in order to help offset war expenses, and to relate the truths behind the government's policies and programs.
The J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) contributed to the war effort during World War II in two ways: by creating ads supporting government policies, and by granting its employees time off for their own war work. JWT's government accounts included the War Manpower Commission, handled by Helen Lansdowne Resor and James Webb Young ; the Naval Aviation Cadet program, handled by Sam Meek ; Woman Power, handled by William E. Berchtold ; and the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps, developed by Ruth Waldo and handled by Thayer Jaccaci . In each of these accounts, as in most campaigns formulated for the government, sponsors in private industry were sought. For instance, advertisements for the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps were sponsored by the Eastman Kodak Company. In addition to the sponsorship of government advertising programs, clients adjusted their own campaigns to reflect America's war-time conditions. Advertising campaigns were also formulated for religious and charitable organizations. Both the British War Relief Society and the Navy Relief Society benefitted from the advertising expertise of J. Walter Thompson Company personnel. International offices of the Company became involved in a number of ways. The London Office, for example, prepared a conservation program for the Ministry of Food, while the Australian Office implemented an Australian-American goodwill campaign.
Company personnel were granted leaves of absence or time for civilian work of importance to the war. Among these were James Webb Young, chair of the War Advertising Council, tyhe predecessor to the Advertising Council; Samuel W. Meek, consultant to the Navy Department; and Walter O'Meara, Deputy Administrator for Information, Office of Price Administration. Those who remained in the office devoted some of their time and talent to aiding such organizations as the Camp Shows for Service Men, the Citizen United for Democracy, and the National War Fund.

Lubertus Smilde biographical note : Known among JWT colleagues as Lou. Born circa 1906 in Brussels, of Dutch parents. Smilde joined the Market Research Department of JWT's Antwerp Office in 1929 following his graduation from the Rotterdam School of Economics. In 1937, Smilde joined the Netherlands Department of Commerce, but soon became involved with the Dutch resistance movement during the German occupation of Holland during WW II. During the war, Smilde was captured twice by German forces, and escaped both times. Following the war he rejoined the Netherlands Department of Commerce and served as Director of Trade Promotion in New York from 1946 to 1952. The Review Board, an advisory system began informally in 1942 as the Plans Board, when James Webb Young and Walter O'Meara headed the Creative Department. In 1956 JWT instituted the Review Board as a trans-departmental entity with written procedures and a Review Board Secretary.
In the years 1964 to 1969, Review Board functions were divided into a Plans Board, which reviewed the account team's recommended strategy (i.e., the basic proposition the advertising should made to consumers), and a Creative Review Board, which evaluated proposals for the implementation and execution of the advertising strategy.

Since the J. Walter Thompson Company opened its first international office in London in 1899, the agency has grown into a multinational company with offices in dozens of countries on every inhabited continent. To the general public, the most visible form of the agency’s presence around the globe has been the advertisements themselves. In some cases, advertisements for the products of multinational corporations such as Eastman-Kodak, IBM, Kraft, Pepsico, R.J. Reynolds, and Unilever reflect the spread of American commercial culture and economic influence across the globe. Other advertisements promote local products, organizations, or public service campaigns.
