Biographical History
Phi Beta Kappa was first organized in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. It is the oldest Greek letter organization in the United States. Phi Beta Kappa primarily elects the top students of each graduating class to become members of the society. The goal of the society is to promote scholarship and friendship among students and those who have graduated from colleges in the United States. The idea to establish a chapter at Indiana University was first introduced in the fall of 1907. A charter was granted on September 14, 1910 at the Council in New York, and the Gamma Chapter was officially established in 1911.
