Biographical History

Angela Bambace (1898-1975), an Italian American labor organizer, was born in Santos, Brazil, of Italian parents. The family lived briefly in Italy and came to the United States when Angela was six years old. She grew up in Harlem, New York, and began work in the garment industry when she was seventeen. Bambace was an advocate of women's rights. She founded the first women's local of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union in 1936, and was a vice president, the only woman on the ILGWU executive board, in 1956. She organized the Amalgamated Clothing Workers' Union strike in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1932 and the walkout of 75,000 dressmakers in New York City in 1933.
