Biographical History

Until 1946, monitoring the production and labor costs at Ford Motor Company was the responsibility of the Factory Accounting Department, later renamed the Accounting Department. The Accounting Department gathered operating cost details and produced reports, summaries, and analysis for Ford management to keep track of the hundreds of millions of dollars spent annually on labor, wages, parts, tools, raw materials, and equipment. The Accounting Department was headed by W. E. Carnegie from 1919 until his death in 1933, when C. L. Martindale became head of the department. Starting in 1945, company-wide reorganizations led to the establishment of decentralized administrative divisions and in 1946, the newly formed Finance Division assumed many of the accounting functions previously done in the Accounting Department. In addition, plant-level Controller's Offices were established to oversee daily financial operations on a local level. In 1946, Otto H. Husen was named Accounting Manager for the Rouge Automotive Manufacturing Operations and in 1948 he was appointed Resident Controller for the Rouge Division.
