David B. Steinman, 11 June 1886- 21 Aug. 1960, bridge design engineer known for his studies of airflow and wind velocity that helped make possible aerodynamically stable bridges. He assisted in design and construction of the Hell Gate Arch Bridge (New York City), the Florianopolis Bridge (Brazil), the Mackinac Bridge (Michigan), and the Triborough Bridge (New York City).

Engineer and bridge builder. Studied at City College of New York, and Columbia University (P.h.D., 1911). The designer of many of the world's most famous bridges, he taught at the University of Idaho, 1910-1915, before returning to New York to collaborate with Gustav Lindendahl in designing Hell Gate Bridge over the East River. In 1920, Steinman began his own consulting firm, and then in partnership with Holton D. Robinson from 1924-1945. Other longtime associates included R.M. Boynton, C.H. Grunquist, and J. London. Some of the major projects of Steinman and his associates included the Mount Hope Bridge (R.I.), Saint John Bridge (Oregon), Brooklyn Bridge reconstruction, and Mackinac Bridge (Michigan). Steinman was also an author of books on bridge building and builders. His biography of John A. and Washington Roebling was critically acclaimed and the basis for a motion picture production of Irving Stone.
