Biographical History

Harold Lewis was a leader in social work education in the United States. He received a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lewis was a faculty member and director of social work schools at Nebraska, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. He was the second dean of the School of Social Work at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY). During his tenure at Hunter College (1970-1990), Dr. Lewis developed a program allowing students to pursue a second specialty in addition to their core social work courses. This idea was adopted by the Council on Social Work Education as an educational requirement for all graduate social work programs. Harold Lewis passed away on July 18, 2003.
