Biographical History
Heywood Walter Seton-Karr, Englishman and former Army captain of the Gordon Highlanders, one of the British Army's most celebrated regiments, came to Alaska in 1886. En route, he met two Americans, William Libbey of Princeton, New Jersey, and Frederick Schwatka, an Army officer who had previously explored the Yukon River, and joined with them in an expedition to climb Mt. St. Elias, sponsored by the New York Times. Along with his sketches, Seton-Karr kept a journal which he published in London in 1887, titled "Shores and Alps of Alaska." Seton-Karr was a working member of the Society for the Preservation of Art in 1900 and exhibited works at the Army Officers' Art Society in the 1930's. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and authored several books on travel and big game hunting. Heywood W. Seton-Karr died in 1938.
