Sargent, Charles Edward, 1854-1935.

Educator; B.A., Bates College, 1883, M.A., 1887; taught in North Texas Teachers' College, Denton, Texas for several years, instructor in history, New Haven High School, 1895-1920, and Commercial High School, New Haven, 1920-1930; received a Ph.D. from Yale in 1905.

Charles Edward Sargent was born on November 8, 1854, in Pittsfield, New Hampshire. He received the degree of B.A. in 1883 and the degree of M.A. in 1887, both from Bates College. Sargent taught at North Texas Teachers' College in Denton, Texas for several years. He then returned to New Haven as an instructor in history at New Haven High School between 1895 and 1920, and Commercial High School until 1930. In 1905, he received a Ph.D. from Yale. He was married to Nettie Shephard on June 27, 1894, in Boston, Massachusetts. They had no children together. Charles Sargent died in Beverly, Massachusetts, on June 16, 1935.

Father, Charles Henry Sargent, superintendent of a department Pittsfield Cotton Mills, and subsequently a shoe manufacturer; son of Moses Long Sargent, of Pittsfield. Mother, Almira (Ring) Sargent; daughter of Theodore and Betsey (Maxfield) Ring, of Loudon, N.H.

Pittsfield Academy; B.A. Bates College 1883, M.A. 1887; taught in North Texas Teachers' College, Denton, Texas, several years; instructor in history New Haven High School 1895-1920, and Commercial High School, New Haven, 1920 until retirement 1930; attended Yale Graduate School 1900-05; had lived in Beverly since 1930; attended Congregational Church.

Married June 27, 1894, in Boston, Mass., Nettie Shephard. No children. Mrs. Sargent died January 12, 1901.

Death due to general arteriosclerosis. Buried in Floral Park Cemetery, Pittsfield. Survived by a sister, Mrs. Henry F. Davis, of Beverly, and a brother, Frank H. Sargent (M.D. Dartmouth 1890), of Pittsfield.
