Biographical History

Thomas H. Sanders taught at Harvard Business School from 1921-1952 as Professor of Accounting.

Thomas H. Sanders was born in Briefly Hill, England in 1885. He received both his Bachelor of Commerce (1905) and his Masters of Commerce (1914) from the University of Birmingham, England. He taught in Japan for six years before coming to Harvard University, where he earned his PhD in Economics and Business (1921).

Professor Sanders began teaching courses in accounting at Harvard Business School in 1921. He was also active in several professional organizations including serving as the president of the National Association of Cost Accounting (1931-1932) and as the director of research at the American Institute of Accountants (1939-1941). During World War II, Professor Sanders served with many government agencies as an accounting adviser and consultant, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the War Production Board, the price adjustment boards of both the Navy and War Departments and the Maritime Commission.

Professor Sanders retired from teaching at Harvard Business School in 1952 and died a year later in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
