John McClintock, editor, educator, and college president, was born October 27, 1814, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died March 4, 1870, in Madison, New Jersey. He taught at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania (1836-1848); was editor of the Methodist Quarterly Review (1848-1856); was pastor of St. Paul's Church in New York (1857-1860); and became the first president of Drew Theological Seminary (1867-1870). During the Civil War, McClintock acted as an unofficial agent for the Federal government and was responsible for preventing recognition of the Confederacy by some European governments. He was tried for being an instigator in the Carlisle, Pennsylvania riot over runaway slaves but was acquitted (1847). He assisted in the compilation of the twelve-volume Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature (1867-; first ten volumes with James Strong).
