Biographical History
Igor Nicholas Asheshov (b. 1891) was a bacteriologist, specializing in bacterial viruses. He served at NYBG as Bacteriologist-in-Charge from 1948-1953 under William Jacob Robbins. His research was towards isolating and identifying bacteriophages in the search for substances to combat influenza and poliomyelitis. Part of his work was funded by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. He was born in Russia on Aug. 13, 1892. He attended Prince Tenishev's School and the Saratov Imperial University. In 1935 he became Research Officer for the Medical Research Council in London and then Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario (Canada). He joined NYBG in 1948. Concurrent with his post at NYBG he was Lecturer in Botany at Columbia University. In 1954 he joined the Lister Institute for Preventive Medicine in London, England. Asheshov published over 40 papers, seven of them related to his NYBG research.
