Biographical History

The Swigart Family moved from Beloit, Kansas, to Laramie, Wyoming, in 1896. Dr. Isaac R. Swigart practiced medicine in Laramie and operated the Strong Mine on Horse Creek 18 miles northeast of Laramie. The town of Leslie, named for Swigart's oldest daughter, was founded as part of the development of the mine, and the family lived there between 1904 and 1909. Following in the footsteps of her father, Leslie Swigart became a doctor, graduating from Lincoln Medical College at Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1917. She practiced medicine in Wyoming and Kansas before moving to Oregon. She served as vice president of the American Medical Women's Association and was the first woman president of the Oregon State Medical Society.

From the description of Swigart family papers, 1896-1983 (bulk 1982-1983). (University of Wyoming, American Heritage Center). WorldCat record id: 27585218
