Scholar and author.
Charles Cowden Clarke, English writer and public lecturer. In his twenties he worked as a teacher at his father's school in Enfield, Middlesex. During this time Clarke befriended a young John Keats, and introduced him to the works of the great poets. He later moved to London, where he made many friends among the literary set, including William Hazlitt, Charles and Mary Lamb, and Leigh Hunt. Clarke held a long career as a public lecturer on literary subjects, and he and his wife Mary wrote many scholarly works on Shakespeare.
