Biographical History
Richard Wayne Stites was born in Savannah. Georgia in 1802, the son of Richard Montgomery and Mary (Wayne) Stites. He received his education in New Jersey. He married Elizabeth Cook of Connecticut on August 31, 1824. They had four children together. Stites was admitted to the Bar in Savannah in 1824 and practiced law until 1832. He gave up law because of his health and returned to Morristown, New Jersey with his family. Stites died in 1877. His father, Richard Montgomery Stites (1777-1813) was born in Savannah, Georgia and married Mary Wayne in 1801. The Stites family originated from Great Britain.
Richard Wayne Stites, (1802-1877) born November 24, 1802, graduated from the first law school in the United States, the Litchfield Law School in Connecticut, in 1822. During his time at Litchfield he took detailed notes of the lectures delivered by Judge James Gould (1770-1838). Stites later practiced law in Morristown, New Jersey, formerly known as West Hanover. He died on July 7, 1877 in Morristown, New Jersey.
