Westover, Charles B. (Charles Bainbridge), 1915-1978

Charles Bainbridge Westover (b. 1915, Fort Gibbon, Tanana, Alaska-d. July 28, 1978), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1937 and earned his pilot wings the following year. During World War II he served as executive officer of a special U.S. air mission in the U.S.S.R., and as chief of staff, 2nd Bomb Division, then commander, 448th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, in England, flying 42 combat missions. From 1949 to 1952, he was assigned to Strategic Air Command (SAC) HQ serving as chief of the Programs Division, Directorate of Plans. He next became commander, 98th Bomb Wing, with the Far East Air Forces in Japan. General Westover was director of plans, SAC HQ (1957-1960), then commander, 7th Air Division, in England. In 1962 he was named vice commander, Tactical Air Command, and in 1965 became vice commander, U.S. Air Force Air Defense Command. He retired in 1967.
