Biographical History
Snow was an admirer of Werfel's poetry who initiated contact with him, after having produced English translations of a number of his poems; she lived in Worcester, Mass. Snow also lectured professionally on a variety of topics, and gave lectures about Werfel and his poetry. A. H. Handley ("Concert and Lecture Management") was an agent, based in Boston, which handled Snow's lecture engagements. Brahm was a translator and a friend of Snow, who was from Germany and currently living in the U.S. Goldman was a postmaster at the U.S. Post Office in New York City, who communicated with Werfel about a package addressed to him from Snow which had been returned to sender. L.B. Fischer, located in New York City, was a publishing company founded by Werfel's publisher Gottfried Bermann Fischer, in partnership with Fritz H. Landshoff, during Fischer's exile years. Hays, Wolf, Schwabacher & Sklar, based in New York City, was a law firm representing Werfel; Schwabacher was a partner of the firm and oversaw legal matters pertaining to Werfel's conflict with Snow. Arlt was a professor of German literature at UCLA and a friend of Werfel. Princeton University Press was the publisher of a book of Werfel's poems with English translations by Snow. Smith was the director of the company; Busch also worked for Princeton University Press, and signed a Memorandum of Agreement as a witness for Smith. Akeret signed the same agreement as a witness for Snow.
