Biographical History

The Office of the Provost is the chief administrative office for each of UCSD's colleges. The Provosts have primary responsibility for formulating and implementing academic policies of their respective colleges. They also participate in the appointment of faculty, the creation of the undergraduate curriculum, design and development of college facilities, allocation of college resources, and establishment of graduation requirements.

Dr. Joseph W. Watson was appointed the first Provost of Third College in 1970 (though he had been preceded by two acting Provosts from 1967-1969) and was succeeded by Faustina Solís (1981-1988) and Cecil Lytle (1988-present). The college opened in 1970 as Third College and was named Thurgood Marshall College in 1993.
