Emily Bulcock was the sister of writer Vance Palmer.

John Shaw Neilson worked at various manual occupations and began contributing poems to the Bulletin in 1901. He continued to have poetry published until his death.

John Neilson (1844-1922) father of John Shaw Neilson had a small quantity of poetry published, notably "Men of the Fifties." Because of eye-trouble, J.S. Neilson dictated most of his poetry and correspondence and very little autograph material survives.

Poet. Neilson's formal education was limited and he spent much of his life as a farm-hand and itinerant worker. He was largely self-taught in poetic techniques but received valuable advice and encouragement from the critic and editor A. G. Stephens.
