Biographical History
Henry Leighton Morrill, soldier and railroad executive. Born in Guilford, Maine, on April 4, 1836 to Benjamin Fanklin Morrill and Sarah A. Leighton Morrill. Raised in Iowa, Morrill worked as a schoolteacher and a merchant before enlisting in 1861 in the First Iowa Cavalry in which he would serve throughout the Civil War. In 1864 Morrill was commissioned as a 1st lieutenant and adjutant in his regiment. Before being discharged in Austin, Texas, in 1866 he was brevetted captain and major. After being mustered out, Morrill relocated to Keokuk, Iowa, where he worked as a revenue collector. In 1870 Morrill began a successful career in railroad administration. He married Clara White of Des Moines, Iowa, on February 10, 1869, and had three children: Grace Adelaide; Edith Clara; and Charles Henry Morrill. He died on July 4, 1904, in St. Louis, Missouri.
