Uniting Church in Australia

In June 1977 the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches of Australia joined together to form the Uniting Church in Australia. Plans for this merger were first discussed early this century. In 1956 a commission was set up to draft the basis of union and in the early 1970s votes were held on this issue. In the Uniting Church a number of parishes form a Presbytery. The Presbyteries in each state form Synods and the national body of the Church is called the Assembly.

In 1977 the Uniting Church in Australia was formed from the union of the Methodist Church of Australasia and part of the former Presbyterian Church of Australia and the Congregational Union of Australia.

Administrative and general records of the Northern Synod of the Uniting Church; records relating to missionary and parish work at Munjilang, Warruwi, Maningrida, Milingimbi, Galiwinku (Elcho Island), Gapuwiyak (Lake Evella), Yirrkala, Nhulunbuy parish, Arafura Presbytery (Darwin and Nightcliff), Centre Presbytery (Alice Springs and Tennant Creek) and Kimberley Presbytery; and records of church institutions such as Nugalinya College and the Somerville Homes.

The Uniting Church in Australia was formed in June 1977 by the amalgamation of Methodist, Congregational and some Presbyterian Churches in Australia.
