Morath, Inge. American Photographer. Born: Graz, Austria, 27 May 1923; moved to the United States, 1962: naturalized, 1963. Education: Educated in Alsace, Darmstadt and Berlin; studied romance languages at Berlin University, 1941-44, and the University of Bucharest, 1943. Family: Married the journalist Lionel Birch in 1951 (divorced, 1954); the playwright Arthur Miller in 1962; daughter: Rebecca. Career: Worked as a cleaner, farmhand, etc., on compulsory labor service, East Prussia, and did war service in aircraft factory, Tempelhof Airdrome, Berlin, during World War II; Editorial Translator and Interpreter, United States Information Service Publications, Salzburg, Austria, 1946-49; freelance radio writer for Red-White-Red Radio Network, and Literary Editor, Der Optimist magazine, Vienna, 1950; Austrian Editor, Heute magazine, Vienna, 1951; photographic apprentice to the photojournalist Simon Guttman, London, 1952. Since 1953, Member of Magnum Photos, Paris and New York, and freelance photographer, working for Life, Paris-Match, Holiday, Saturday Evening Post, etc., in Europe and the United States. Researcher and assistant to photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, on numerous trips throughout Europe and the United States, 1953, 1954. Lecturer, Cooper Union, New York, 1971-72. Recipient: Outstanding Accomplishment Award, State of Michigan, 1983; Certificate of Appreciation, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., 1985. D.F.A.: University of Hartford, Connecticut, 1984. Honorary Member, Austrian Museum of Photography, 1985. Winner Great Austrian State Prize for Photography, 1992. Lives in Roxbury, Connecticut.
