Biographical History

U.S. Army 2nd Lieutenant Robert K. Cook served as a navigator on a bomber in the European theater during World War II. In May of 1944 his plane was shot down and he was captured by the Germans and placed in Prisoner of War Camp Stalag Luft III. As a prisoner Cook wrote a diary which chronicles the day-to-day life of he and his fellow Prisoners of War at Stalag Luft III until their release in April 1945. Because of his artistic talents, his fellow prisoners assigned him the duty of drawing the maps for what became the Great Escape on March 24, 1944.

From the description of Diary 1944-1993 (bulk 1944-1945). (University of Wyoming, American Heritage Center). WorldCat record id: 53867074
