Biographical History

Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) chief factor at the Eastmain factory located at the mouth of Riviere Eastmain, Quebec, on James Bay.

Born in England, Atkinson joined the HBC in the late 1750's, serving as a sailor and later mate on its James Bay sloops. In 1778, Atkinson was appointed master of Eastmain, a command he held almost continuously until his death in 1792. Under Atkinson's direction, the Eastmain grew in importance, and by 1786, the post had become independent of Moose Factory and a factory in its own right.

From the description of A copy of the correspondence carried on at East Main by Mr. George Atkinson in the years 1784 & 85 : letterbook. (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 34223026
