Biographical History

James Denison Sawyer (1813-1881) was born in Windham, Conn. He came to Buffalo in 1837, established a general store on Commercial St., and later entered the commission business on Central Wharf. He married Charlotte Olivia Field in 1841. They had five children: James, who died in infancy, George Pliny, Elizabeth Field, Ida D. and William Babcock. George Pliny Sawyer (1851-1920) graduated from Yale University and was active in the lumber business. He married Ida Maria Wilcox, daughter of D.H. Wilcox, in 1874. They had four children: James Denison, Margaret Field, Ansley Wilcox and Chloe.
