Biographical History
Joshua Fulton Ensor (1836-1907), a Maryland native, 1862 graduate of University of Maryland School of Medicine, and U.S. Army Surgeon, 1862-1865; arrived in Columbia, S.C., in 1865, served as medical purveyor for the Freedmen's Bureau at end of the Civil War; moved family from Virginia to Columbia in 1868; later acted as superintendent of the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum, 1870-1878; served as postmaster of Columbia.
J.F. Ensor also served as chief inspector of customs for the port of Charleston, 1879-1882; as deputy collector of internal revenue, 1882-1894; was twice nominated as Republican congressional candidate and was selected as a delegate to the 1892 Republican national convention before being appointed in 1897 as postmaster of Columbia by President McKinley, then reappointed by Theodore Roosevelt in 1901.
