Biographical History
Albine Werfel (née Kussi) was Franz Werfel's mother. Rudolf Werfel was Albine's husband and Franz's father; Rudolf and Albine married in 1889 and lived in Prague. In 1938 and 1939 Albine and Rudolf Werfel were visiting in Switzerland; right before the outbreak of war in 1939, they moved to France, where they resided in Vichy, then Bergerac and finally Marseille, where Rudolf Werfel died, in 1941, while they were awaiting passage to the U.S. Albine Werfel subsequently made the trip to the U.S. and settled in New York City. Červenka was the First Secretary of the Czechoslovak Legation in Washington, D.C., and wrote to Werfel concerning the status of the visa application of Werfel's parents. Eduard Goldstücker (1913-200) was a diplomat and scholar who published a letter from Franz Werfel addressed to his parents.
