Biographical History
Lieutenant General (LTG) William E. Odom grew up in Tennessee. He received his commission into the United States (U.S.) Army at the USMA in 1954. In 1954 he went to the U.S. Army Infantry School. From July 1970 to June 1971, Odom served in Vietnam as the Plans Officer of Civil Operations and Rural Development Support, U.S. Army Military Assistance Command.
Odom twice was a professor at the USMA. From November 1981 to May 1985, he was Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, U.S. Army, and from May 1985 to July 1988 he was Director, National Security Agency/Chief, Central Security Service, National Security Agency. Throughout his career, Odom attended the following schools: the U.S. Army Armor School, the Defense Language Institute, Columbia University, the U.S. Army Field Detachment R, and the Defense Intelligence School. Odom retired 31 July 1988.
