Biographical History

Louis Gex Obussier was born in Canton de Vaud, Switzerland. He married Lucille sometime before 1790 and they produced six children. Mr. Obussier came to the United States in the early 1800s on behalf of Swiss merchant, Jean Mennet to manage land supposedly in Virginia that Mennet had purchased. The land proved to be non productive and Obussier moved on to Vevay, Switzerland County in Indiana Territory where he was a farmer and wine maker. Mrs. Obussier died in October 1806 and he married Marian Goley six years later and they had one daughter, Columbine. In 1826, Mr. Obussier moved to New Harmony, Posey County, and served as the town's postmaster from 1829-1839. During this time, he lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Columbine and William Pelham.
