Born April 16, 1933, in Champaign, Illinois; educated at the University of Colorado (BA, 1954) and Yale University (MA, 1954; PhD (geology), 1958). Research associate, Yale University, 1959-60; geologist, Illinois State Geological Survey, 1960-64; faculty, department of Geology, Western Washington University, 1964-82; geologist and director of Stratigraphic Sciences, Gulf Oil Exploration and Production Company, 1982-85; biostratigrapher, Chevron U.S.A., 1985-92; research associate, department of Geology, Western Washington University, 1992 to date.
