Biographical History
Charles Lowell (1782-1861) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard College in 1800. After studying law for a year he decided to pursue a career in ministry, and he traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, where he studied for the ministry until 1805. He then returned to the United States, and in 1806 was ordained as minister and pastor at the West Church in Boston . He married Harriet Spence in 1806, and the couple had six children, two of whom - Robert Trail Spence and James Russell Lowell - became notable writers. Charles Lowell received the degree of Doctor of Divinity from Harvard in 1823. In addition to being pastor of the West Church until his death in 1861, he was a member of the Massachusetts Bible Society, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel among the Indians, the Evangelical Missionary Society, and the Massachusetts Historical Society .
Charles Lowell (1782-1861) was a Congregational minister who graduated from Harvard University in 1800, and received a doctorate in theological studies from Harvard Divinity School in 1823. He was ordained and made pastor of the West Church in Boston in 1806, and was pastor there until he died in 1861.
