Biographical History
The First Universalist Church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was established in 1777. The congregation became associated with the Unitarian South Church in 1945, and the two churches formally merged in January 1947.
Moses Ballou (1811-1879) was the nephew of Hosea Ballou (1771-1852), a prominent Universalist preacher and pastor in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He was pastor of Universalist congregations in New Hampshire, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.
