Epithet: General
In October 177, Alexander McDougall was appointed Major General and was put in command of a division consisting of seven Connecticut and Massachusetts regiments. In the late fall of 1777, McDougall's division attempted to prevent a British advance southwest of Philadelphia.
In 1778, Alexander McDougall succeeded Israel Putnam as the commanding general at the Hudson Highlands.
Revolutionary soldier and agitator.
General in Continental Army 1776-1783, for most of the Revolution commanding officer in the Highlands of the Hudson. Court-martialed for insubordination 1782. After the war he served in the Continental Congress and the New York Senate, and as the first president of the Bank of New York.
Delegate to U.S. Continental Congress from New York and army officer.
Merchant, revolutionary, and Continental Army officer; resident of New York City.
